Toilet Troubles

They may seem like a lot to handle, but most toilet repairs are pretty simple once you know what you're doing.

1. Here is how toilets work; pushing the handle lifts the flapper in the bottom of the tank. While it's up, water empties into the toilet, which forces the contents out and away. When the flapper closes, the water supply re-fills the tank, as it fills the float ball or float cup will rise, when it reaches the top, it shuts off.

2. For a sticky handle, remove the flush lever and mounting nut. Clean each piece and the opening with an old toothbrush dipped in white vinegar and then put them back in place.

3. If the toilet is running, you can try a few things. First, jiggle the flush lever. If that stops it, the handle is too loose (which can easily be tightened by adjusting the nut that holds it in place counter-clockwise).

4. If that's not it, check the lift chain. It may have too little or too much slack. You want about a half-inch. Adjust the slack by moving it along the bar it is attached to and see if that helps.

5. The running can also mean that the flapper is not sealing. Turn off the water supply at the bottom of the toilet and flush to empty the toilet tank. Dry the flapper and valve seat. Coat both parts with petroleum jelly to rejuvenate the rubber. Then all you have to do is turn the water supply back on.
