Plumbing

Toilet Flapper

A running toilet is more than just an annoyance it could be the sign of a defective flush ball or flapper, parts that are easy to replace, I'll show you!

1. Shut off the water supply, flush the toilet to drain the tank, and use a sponge to dry up excess water.

2. Remove the old flapper mechanism.

3. Clean, the flush valve; a little white vinegar will cut through any mineral deposits. If your valve is brass, scrub it with some steel wool and then rinse clean.

4. For a brass valve, you'll need a complete flapper retrofit kit, which will replace the flush valve as well as the flush ball to ensure a nice, tight seal. If your valve is plastic you only need to replace the flush valve itself.

5. Put the flush valve into position and snap it in place on the refill tube.

6. Hold the flapper down and attach the chain to a hole in the trip lever, make sure that you leave a little slack in the chain.

7. When the flush ball is in place, turn the water back on to test the flush!
