Home Safety

Stock the Car

We all make sure our homes are safe and stocked for emergencies, but what about the car?

1. When you think about your car you should stock for emergencies, maintenance, and auto paper work. I suggest a toolbox of sorts for each. My choices, a visor clip CD organizer, travel toiletries case and a diaper bag.

2. A diaper bag has lots of compartments to hold stuff, it's easily portable and most come with a changing pad that you can use to kneel on if you need to change a flat!!! Stock the diaper bag with a flashlight, batteries, a small tool kit or a good multi-tool, a tire gauge, jumper cables, extra washer fluid, a blanket, a first aid kit and sunscreen. Then stow it in the trunk!

3. Use the CD organizer for items you need within reach, a list of emergency numbers and contacts, your registration and insurance cards, maps.

4. We all need to write down something at one time or another so don't forget paper and pen, or get some that can clip right to your visor.

5. Use the travel case to corral anything that won't fit into your glove box but that you need in the car, this way they won't fly around if you hit the brakes! Stow the bag in back of the drivers seat so you can always find it!

6. One last thing, you might want to consider an auto escape hammer, something you may need, that you'll hope you never have to use.
