Repair a Compression Faucet

One of the most common types of faucet is a compression faucet, the kind with two handles. A common problem is that it leaks at the base, but it's an easy fix!

1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet. The shut-off valve should be located under your sink.

2. Remove the index cap (the little disks that are marked "h" or "c"). Remove the screw that you find under that disk and lift off the handle.

3. Use a pair of slip joint pliers to loosen the nuts that are holding the stem assembly in place. Then, pull the stem out of the faucet. The leak is most likely caused by worn parts in the stem assembly. The part is pretty inexpensive so just replace the whole device. Bring it with you to the store so you're sure you're getting exactly the right one.

4. Slip the new stem assembly into place making sure that it lines up straight and it fits snugly. Twist the nuts back into place securing them with slip-joint pliers. Then, replace the handle, making sure to tighten down the screw.

5. Replace the index cap, turn the water back on, and then test the faucet.
