Radiator Check-up

Steam radiators require very little maintenance, but there are a couple of easy things that you can do so you'll be toasty warm.

1. Make sure that your inlet valve is opened up all the way. This allows the radiator to heat properly, and helps prevent loud knocking sounds that can come from your pipes.

2. If your radiator doesn't seem to be working properly, a clogged steam vent may be the problem. Turn the inlet valve all the way off to stop the steam. Carefully unscrew the vent, and boil it for about ten minutes in white vinegar. You can use an old toothbrush or a straightened paper clip to ensure that you got all of the mineral deposits out. Then just return the valve to the radiator.

3. To maximize your heating, place a foam insulation board covered in foil behind the radiator. This will redirect the heat away from the wall and into the room.
