Plumbing

Plungers

Plungers are special tools designed to suction out clogs in drains and toilets. Using them correctly can mean the difference between solving the problem and making a huge mess.

1. There are two kinds of plungers that you should have in your house. A bulb-shaped plunger (which has a lip designed especially to fit into your toilet bowl), and a bowl-shaped plunger (which fits sinks and tubs with a tight seal).

2. For a toilet clog, bail out standing water. This is especially important if you have tried chemicals to clear the clog. Fill the bowl with enough clean water to cover the suction cup. This will ensure an airtight seal.

3. To clear a sink or bathtub clog, you need to cover the overflow vent (as well as) the drain to make sure that the action is effective. Hold a wet washcloth over the vent.
