Plumbing

Leaky Pipes

A leaky pipe can send a homeowner into a panic, and most leaks signify bigger problems in the line. I have some easy tips that will stop a leak until you can fix it or call a plumber in.

1. Most importantly know where the shut offs are for each sink and toilet as well as the whole house.

2. Keep some items on hand in a mini emergency kit to help when you've sprung a leak! Hose clamps, "C" clamps, Pipe clamps in several sizes, steel wool, and rubber patches. This is a great way to recycle those thick rubber gloves.

3. Wipe the area down so it is clean. Rub with steel wool to remove rust and scaling. Then aim your hairdryer on the pipe for a few seconds to make sure that it is dry.

4. The most secure method is to affix a pipe clamp over the leak. These clamps come with a rubber gasket attached and fasten tightly in place.

5. Another option, cover the leak with a rubber patch and secure a hose clamp around the pipe.

6. If you don't have any pipe or hose clamps, cover the leak with a piece of rubber, then place a small wooden block over the patch and secure both to the pipe with a "C" clamp.
