Lead Paint Safety

Older homes are certainly charming, but the paint used in those homes can pose a health risk, especially for children and pregnant women. I have some tips to help keep you and your family safe from lead poisoning.

1. Something as simple as opening a window or vacuuming can cause lead dust, which believe it or not, is the most common cause of lead poisoning for both children and adults. What can you do? Clean frequently, especially neglected areas like windows and door casings and sills.

2. When cleaning up paint chips forget the vacuum, it will make dust. Opt instead for warm soapy water and plenty of paper towels. Wear rubber gloves while you work and use a new towel whenever you need to Re-wet. This way you won't contaminate the water with lead residue.

3. You should also wet mop and dust with a spray or polish at least once a week.

4. When you're done cleaning, pour the wash water down the toilet and throw away towels and gloves in a sealed plastic bag.

5. Beyond cleaning, it is a good idea to remove or repaint lead based surfaces. When the current owners bought this house they used a bonding agent to seal or encapsulate the lead based paint and then painted all surfaces with a fresh coat.

6. For more information on lead paint safety, contact your local health agency.
