Ladder Safety

Whether you're cleaning your gutters or changing a lightbulb in the ceiling, a ladder is a necessity. But there are a few things you should know so you stay safe and your house doesn't end up damaged.

1. Put socks over the tops of a ladder before you lean it against the house. This way the metal won't mar the house.

2. When you put your ladder against your house, remember it should be out from the wall a quarter of the height of the ladder. So, if you have an eight foot ladder, pull it out 2 feet from the house!

3. Attach a piece of carpet to the bottom rung of your ladder so you can wipe your feet off before you climb up. This way you won't slip because of dirty shoes.

4. When climbing up or down a ladder, you should always face the ladder. You're much less likely to lose your balance and you'll have a better hold.

5. You should never step on the top of a ladder. An easy way to remember this is to attach a work apron around the step with a staple gun. You won't climb past the apron, and it's a great place to store your tools, paintbrushes or anything else you may have up there.
