Install a Security Deadbolt

A security deadbolt is easy to install. I'll tell you how it's done.

1. There are two choices, a single cylinder lock which opens with a key from the outside and a knob on the inside; a double cylinder opens with a key on the inside and out.

2. Deadbolts come with specific instructions and a template. First tape the template in place over the door and use an awl or large nail to mark the center points for the lock cylinder and bolt.

3. Use a hole saw to drill through the door. Prevent splintering by drilling until the saw just breaks the surface of the opposite side. Then remove the hole saw and start again on the other side.

4. A spade bit will make the latch hole in the side of the door, just remember to keep the drill level.

5. Then chisel out some wood for the face and strike plates. Insert the bolt through the side of the door. Trace a template of the faceplate. Close the door and mark the jamb for the strike plate. Trace that too. Place a chisel against the door and tap it in to cut the outline of your pattern. With the beveled end of your chisel facing downward and held at a forty-five degree angle make a series of cuts about a quarter inch apart along the pattern. Then run the chisel in the other direction to chip away the waste.

6. Insert the bolt through the door and screw it into place. Then screw the front and back of the deadbolt in place.

7. Bore a hole for the bolt in the doorjamb.

8. Screw the strike plate in place all you have to do is test your new lock.

Stop That Draft: Weather-stripping Sliding Glass Doors

Weather-stripping sliding glass doors can save you money and make your house more comfortable. If you’ve ever sat by a glass door and swore you could feel the wind blowing right through it, you probably have weather-stripping in doors and/or windows that has deteriorated. The result is a gap between the frame and the glass doors. It may be too small to see, but it’s big enough to create an air leak.

Skylight Sizing for Your Room
Skylight sizing is a critical part of installing a skylight. Skylights are lovely additions to homes as long as they are installed properly. When skylight sizing isn't measured properly it can cause a whirlwind of problems. One of the major problems is leaking. A leaky skylight can cause damage to your roof, ceiling, and especially anything that sits inside underneath it. Also the size determines the position of installation in the room and how much extra sunlight you will be receiving.

Saving Money with Window Insulation Coverings
Anyone who owns a home or rents an apartment comes to the realization that no matter how good the windows are the R-value is not enough to prevent energy loss.
