Home Safety

Most of us have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in our homes, but there are some other safety issues to consider.

1. Install ground fault circuit interrupters; they're the outlets with the test and re-set buttons in the center. GFCI's monitor the amount of electricity to an outlet; if there is a problem they cut off the power supply. Make sure that you have these located in areas around water, kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas and outside.

2. Having flashlights available for a power outage seems obvious, but do you know where yours are in your home? Do they have working batteries in them? It is best to keep a flashlight in every bedroom and check the batteries every month so you know they'll work when you need them.

3. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit, and keep it up to date. Make sure your family knows exactly where it is.

4. Know where the main shutoff is for major systems in the house, like electrical, gas and water. If there's an emergency you won't have to go searching.

5. Lighting is also important at night, so use plenty of nightlights. If anyone gets up in the middle of the night they'll be able to find their way around safely.
