Home Safety and Security

If you're looking for some ways to make sure your house is safe and secure, I have a few ideas to give you peace of mind.

1. All exterior doors in your house should be made of solid wood or metal and be equipped with a heavy-duty deadbolt lock that extends into the door framing.

2. If you have a solid door that you can't see through, consider installing a peephole; your best bet is one with a wide angle so you can get a clear view outside your door.

3. Check all of the windows, they should fit securely in their frames and shouldn't be able to be jiggled from side to side. If you can wiggle it so could a burglar and shimmy the lock free.

4. Don't keep a spare key hidden anywhere near your house. If you must have a spare, keep it in a shed, hidden in the garden or just with a trusted neighbor, not near the house.

5. You could also look into a security system that offers keyless entry with a touch pad or install a lock box with a combination.

Beware of Independent Contractor Fraud

Independent contractor fraud can be a serious problem in the construction industry unfortunately. An independent contractor is a person who is licensed to independently perform certain kinds of work. The license indicates they have met all state and federal requirements for contractors and is legitimate. Unfortunately, too many people pass themselves off as licensed contractors, when in fact they don’t have the proper licenses or qualifications.
