Furnace Maintenance

Can you imagine your forced air furnace kicking out on the coldest day of the year? A couple of preventative steps can help keep that from happening.

1. Dust can cause a lot of problems for your furnace so you need to keep it to a minimum. Make sure that you vacuum the registers in every room once a month, getting the dust and dirt out of all of the nooks and crannies. Remove the grate from the larger air returns and vacuum in there too.

2. Your furnace filter also needs monthly maintenance during the heating season and the cooling season too if you have central air conditioning. Many units have disposable filters; these generally lie at an angle or vertically in front of the furnace blower.

3. Pull the old filter out of the unit. Vacuum the interior of the duct thoroughly. You may even want to wipe it down with a damp rag. Once the duct is nice and clean install a new filter. These filters cost anywhere from sixty-nine cents to fifteen dollars for specialized allergen reducing models. This is an inexpensive way to prevent big repair bills down the road.
