Extension Cord Safety

Extension cords are a necessity in any household, but it's really important that you make sure that you have the right one for the job. I have some pointers to help you out.

1. Extension cords come in various gauges, it is the gauge that tells how much electricity the cord can handle. The thicker the wire, the lower the gauge, the more current it can carry.

2. When using three prong tools, make sure that you use a three prong cord, never use an adaptor on an extension cord, you will risk serious shock.

3. It may seem like a no brainer, but it bears saying - make sure your tools are turned off before you plug them in!

4. If you're working outside only use cords designated for outdoor use and make sure that you check the length of the cord each time you use it for cracks or tears in the housing.

5. Another safety measure; don't run an extension cord from inside to use outside unless it is plugged into a GFCI outlet to protect against shock.

6. If you're using a cord with multiple outlets but you only need one of them, cover the rest with child safety covers.

7. If you're looking for a really safe cord some newer models have GFCI's built right into them.
