How to Pick Grout Color

Tips to help you learn how to pick grout color for your new tile.
Choosing new tile is an exciting and fun way to enhance almost any area of your home. Floors, bathrooms, countertops and kitchen backsplashes are all areas where tile looks and works great. Usually the main concern is choosing the right tile but don't forget the grout color. Learning how to pick grout color involves more than just matching the color to the tile.

For many homes, the grout color is white. This can work but adding a bit of color to your grout can do more than just create a winning coloring combination. Depending on the area where the tile will be placed, the grout color can play an important role to help prevent dirt and grime from showing.

Also, if the area is exposed to a lot of moisture, you can deter the look of mildew and mold on your grout by using a color other than white. Over time, choosing a color other than white may help to distract from any stains that may accumulate on your grout.

How to Pick Grout Color

Grout is made from a mixture of water, cement and sand. The grout is applied as a thick liquid and hardens over time. Almost any combination of tint can be added to the grouting material, so your color choices aren't limited. Once the grout sets, the color may be slightly different from its appearance before it dries. If you're mixing tints, it may be a good idea to do a test sample and let it dry to make sure you have just the color you want.

Choosing a dark color grout to compliment light tile can have a dramatic effect on the overall look of the tiled area. This can work well especially on floors where you want a classic tile look. Areas like a kitchen backsplash often blend best by choosing complimentary color just a tone lighter than the tile. There are no set rules when learning how to pick grout color. Let your personality and tastes be your main guide.
