Sports Flooring Materials for the Layman

There are a lot of different uses for sports flooring and sports flooring materials, but, of course, there are several that are commonly known like school gyms and basketball courts. But sports flooring materials can be used for your home too, so knowing what type of material the floors are made of and what options are available is a good idea for the layman who wants to create a home gym.

Most sports flooring materials are rubber. While there are numerous ways of making these rubber floorings, the base material is usually the same. There are two types of rubber sports flooring materials: recycled rubber flooring uses 100% or a significant percentage of recycled rubber to create sports flooring; non-recycled or "virgin" rubber flooring can also be used. Both materials can be used indoors or outdoors, depending on how the sports flooring materials were treated to make the flooring. Most floorings come in large tiles that lock together to form the complete floor.

Different Types of Sports Flooring Materials

Most of the time, you will see sports flooring materials used in school gyms or in athletic complexes. But you can use the materials to build a home gym floor. By choosing flooring with a lot of tread, like a diamond plate patterned tile, you can add an interesting dimension to the floor of your home workout room.

While most people think of sports flooring as being just for athletic facilities, gymnasiums, and schools, there are other uses for sports flooring materials. For example, they can be used for a recreation room in your home. You can have a cushioned, rubber floor put into your basement rec room to ensure that when your kids get a little rowdy, they won't get hurt. Playground tiles often have cushioning underneath the actual flooring that will better protect a child more than if he falls on harder, non-cushioned sports flooring materials. You can also find sports flooring materials in portable mats that can be placed in a play area in your home that will not take up an entire room.
