Plumbing

Clean the Hot Water Heater

Maintaining your hot water heater is important to make it run more efficiently. I'll show you how; it's really easy. Over time lime, iron and calcium settle in the bottom of your hot water heater. In order for the water to become hot it must first heat.

1. The drain valve is located at the bottom of the water heater. You'll know this because the drain valve will have a threaded spout that you can hook to a garden hose. Attach the garden hose securely to the valve and then direct it into a large bucket or a floor drain if you have one. Be aware before you open the valve that the water will be hot so be careful.

2. Turn the valve counterclockwise until it is fully opened and allow the water to drain for two to three minutes or until the water runs clear.

3. Then close the valve and unscrew the hose. That is all there is to this easy maintenance project.

4. Make sure that you keep the area around your water heater free of laundry, boxes and clutter. They can pose a real fire hazard.
