Caulk Types
Caulk can save you money by filling in gaps around windows,
siding and in the bathroom. There are tons of different kinds of
caulk, but there are three you'll really need.
1. Acrylic latex caulk seals cracks around windows and
doors. It comes in different colors, can be painted, and cleans
up with soap and water.
2. The second caulk is butyl rubber. This is the kind you
need to seal cracks in concrete and brick, and also to secure
metal. It can be painted, is really strong and holds up against
the elements, but you need a solvent to clean it up.
3. The last kind is silicon caulk. This is the most
versatile. It will stick to just about anything, is really
flexible and doesn't shrink a lot. Unfortunately, this caulk is
not paintable and will not stick to paint.
4. To smooth a bead of caulk, you can use the end of an
old toothbrush, a plastic spoon or even an ice cube!
5. To seal up a partially used caulk tube, just fasten a
wire connector over the end. It will be nice and fresh the next
time you need it.

Staining Deck Railings – Making It Last
The more solid the stain color, the longer it will last.
Therefore, the solid stains are best for areas like railings
that are more difficult to stain than decking. Staining deck
railings is not difficult, but it does take more care than
simply staining the flat deck. So you want to use a color that
will last as long as possible.
